VE Day Celebrations

This week we’ve been celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day!
We’ve had special school visitors come to lead assemblies, telling us all about how VE Day was celebrated in Box 80 years ago. One very special visitor was actually part of the VE day celebrations in Box and told us how he remembers attending the party on The Rec dressed as a pirate. It sounded like quite the party- with bonfires, open pubs and Spam! Everyone came in fancy dress and second place (a lady dressed as a baby) won an orange- it’s hard to imagine that that would have been the envy of everyone!
We had a special VE day lunch of fish and chips- as this was one of the few foods not rationed- and celebrated together as a picnic lunch. It was lovely to get the whole school together and create a party feel.
We’ve been listening to VE day music: including Vera Lynn and music used to dance the lindy hop. KS2 have been looking at art created in memory of VE day and had a go at creating their own Lowry-style VE day picture.
Mostly we’ve been thinking about how exciting it must have been to realise that a very scary time was coming to an end and the importance of peace.
