Curriculum

Our Curriculum Intent

At Box Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision: Plant, Nurture, Flourish, Serve. We want every child to be known, valued and encouraged to flourish as a unique individual, equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and confidence to make a positive difference in the world around them.

Our curriculum is ambitious, purposeful and rooted in our community. It builds on the strengths of our children, our school and our village, whilst opening windows to the wider world. Through rich and meaningful learning experiences, we encourage children to ask questions, think deeply, explore different perspectives and develop a growing understanding of their place within God’s world.

Plant

We plant the foundations for lifelong learning. Children develop a strong knowledge base alongside the essential skills of reading, writing, mathematics, science, computing and communication. We nurture curiosity, creativity and a love of learning, providing children with the secure foundations they need to thrive.

Nurture

We nurture the whole child. Our Christian values of respect, compassion, courage, forgiveness and justice are woven through school life and our curriculum. We create opportunities for children to develop resilience, confidence, collaboration and empathy, learning how to listen to others, appreciate difference and respond thoughtfully to the challenges they encounter.

Flourish

We want every child to flourish. Our curriculum is broad, balanced and connected, enabling children to make meaningful links between subjects and apply their learning in different contexts. Through our curriculum, children explore the relationships between people, places, subjects, the past, the present and the future. We deliberately provide opportunities for children to think critically and creatively, solve problems, communicate effectively and become increasingly independent learners. The

Serve

We encourage our children to serve others and to recognise that they have the power to make a difference. Our curriculum connects children with their local community, the wider world and the challenges facing society and our planet. Through real-life experiences and opportunities to explore citizenship and global issues, children learn that their voices matter and that they can act with courage, compassion and hope.

Our curriculum therefore reaches beyond the classroom. Children learn about their local heritage and community while developing an understanding of their responsibilities as global citizens. They consider the impact of the choices they make today on future generations and are encouraged to become courageous advocates.

At the heart of our curriculum is the belief that learning should be meaningful, memorable and connected. We make purposeful links across subjects where this deepens understanding, while ensuring that subjects such as Science, RE, and PE retain their own identity and disciplinary knowledge. By focusing on depth rather than simply covering content, we give children time to secure knowledge, practise skills and develop genuine understanding.

Ultimately, our curriculum seeks to prepare children not simply for the next stage of their education, but for life. We want them to leave Box as confident, compassionate and courageous young people who know that they belong, understand their responsibility to others and feel empowered to use their gifts to make a positive difference.

We plant the foundations, nurture potential, help every child flourish and inspire them to serve others.

Plant. Nurture. Flourish. Serve.

As a mixed-age school, we have carefully designed our curriculum around a two-year cycle, ensuring that learning is both progressive and accessible to all children within a class. The cycle provides a clear sequence of learning, with knowledge and skills carefully built upon and revisited over time. This approach allows teachers to respond to the different ages, starting points and needs of our pupils, while ensuring that no child misses out on essential learning. Careful consideration has been given to the order in which knowledge and skills are taught, so that each year builds meaningfully on what has come before and prepares children for what comes next.
